Alpena Public Schools Finance Committee members recently heard about Governor Rick Snyder's budget proposals for the upcoming fiscal year.
The budget for fiscal years 2019 and 2020 recommends total ongoing funding of 14.5 billion dollars, of which 45 million is general fund. The governor also recommends 93.4 million in onetime spending in fiscal year 2019 and $88.1 million in 2020.
The Executive Budget includes an investment of $312 million to provide schools with a per pupil foundation allowance increase between $120 and $240, which would be the largest increase to minimum foundation allowance since 2002. That would bring the minimum payment to just under 79 hundred dollar per pupil ($7,871.00) and a maximum payment to just over 84 hundred ($8,409.00).
APS Assistant Superintendent for Business and Operations Diane Block mentioned that the increase will depend on a number of conditions from the state that might have to be complied with.
After the Governor issued his proposal, state lawmakers are in the process of reviewing it.
