Alpena County Commissioners approved creating a new budget line item to cover expenses associated with construction of a new Alpena County Jail.

Sheriff Steve Kieliszewski made the request as members of a jail construction committee have been traveling and touring other facilities in Minnesota and the east cost to get an idea of available options. It was revealed Tuesday that costs for those trips was in the 81-hundred dollar range, and the board also allowed higher room and meal expenses that were above county policy limits.

Commissioner Chairman Cameron Habermehl saying "We have to make an adjustment to our travel policy because I wasn't aware that we only had a $70.00 hotel limit on travel, which I don't think you'll find a hotel anywhere for $70.00". He noted that the policy would also be sent back to the Personnel Committee to review and make recommendations.

The travel expenses will come from the new line item created for associated jail costs. Initially, 1-hundred thousand dollars will be placed in the budget line item from the general fund. That will later be reimbursed from voter approved millage money to cover preliminary costs, such as travel, site reviews, surveying, and other various bills.

Sheriff Steve Kieliszewski also explained that the jail committee has selected an architectural company, and the company has not been disclosed pending final negotiations. A contract was sent to the Prosecutors office and some concerns were noted. Kieliszewski noting another attorney might be contacted to further review language.
