County Seeks Bids on Sheriff Patrol SUV's

Acting on a request from Undersheriff Terry King, Alpena County Commissioner Finance Committee members recommended to the full board that bids be sought for new Sport Utility Vehicles (SUV'S) for road patrols.

This time around, the new vehicles would be leased as opposed to purchasing reconditioned units. King felt four year leases on each would save money through Ford Motor Credit, as units would have unlimited miles available, and at the end of the lease the county can purchase the vehicles for a dollar. The units would still have a lot of usable miles left on them, and having more 4 x 4 units allows travel into areas that is difficult with regular cars.

To purchase each would cost about $30,000.00 plus per vehicle, something that the county can't afford. But leasing on low monthly payments would result in paying about $30,000 dollars a year for all four.

King noted that overall, the departments fleet is in good shape as deputies take units home and can quickly respond to any incident. Deputies are assigned a vehicle and responsible for its maintenance, which also keeps the fleet in better condition.
