Area Teams Ready To Raise Awareness About Cancer

Alpena High School and Alpena Community College basketball players are lacing up their shoes and will be sporting pink to spread the awareness of breast cancer.

Alpena Community College, Alpena High School, Alpena Cancer Center and Alpena Regional Medical Center Development Council are partnering to host three Alpena “Pink Out” basketball games in February.

Teams will sport pink uniforms to highlight the cause that will benefit the ARMC Mammography Subsidy Fund. In addition AHS Leadership, AHS Cheerleaders, AHS Advanced Marketing Students, ACC Student Leadership Committee, and ACC Student Nurses are planning their own added pink fun.

The Alpena High Schools Girl’s Varsity team will host Gaylord on Friday, February 8 at 7:30 p.m. while the AHS Boy’s Varsity host Cadillac on Thursday, February 14 at 7:30 p.m. Come early and watch the JV and Freshman teams, their games begin at 6 p.m.
Join AHS school for a special Pack the House nights with $1 admission on each night.

The Alpena Community College Lady Lumberjacks will host Henry Ford Community College on Saturday, February 16 at 7:30 p.m. in the pink game. The Men’s Game begins at 5:30 p.m.

In addition to the activities during the games, Upper Cut Salon (573 N. June, 356-3455) and the Figurehead (570 N. Ripley, 356-4412) are offering Pink Hair Extension for a $5 donation beginning January 31 at both salons.

Ann Diamond, ARMC Development Director said “In the end we are working toward the same goal of helping women receiving a life saving screening mammogram.” Since 2004 when the Mammography Subsidy Fund was established, 1,615 women utilized the fund.

The 2013 Hoops for Hope highlighter pink edition t-shirts are available at the Alpena Community College Bookstore, Alpena High School Campus Closet and the ARMC Development Department for a minimum donation of $10. Wear your 2013 Hoops for Hope t-shirt to each of the three games for a chance to win a pink basketball. Also, the students have gathered great items for Pink gift basket raffles during each game. Watch for new events during the half time of the games. Proceeds from the shirts and raffles will benefit the ARMC Mammography Subsidy fund.

Hoops for Hope Committee members include: Mike Kollien, Joyce McCoy, Megan Lorenzi, Megan Barkley, Kathy Garant, Staci Chroninger, and Ann Diamond.
