The Detroit Red Wings were shorthanded today at practice because of various injuries. Forward Darren Helm is nursing a sore back, while defenseman Jakub Kindl and forward Todd Bertuzzi were out with groin injuries. Head coach Mike Babcock believes Helm will miss the first three-games of the regular season. Kindl and Bertuzzi are questionable for Saturday's opener at St. Louis.

The Pistons are back home following a 102-87 loss to the Knicks yesterday in London. Detroit, now 14-and-25 on the year, will play host to the Boston Celtics on Sunday at The Palace. The Suns and head coach Alvin Gentry have agreed to part ways. Gentry, who coached the Pistons in the late 90's, could be replaced in Phoenix by former Pistons guard Lindsey Hunter. Various reports say Hunter is in the running for the job.

Michigan State coach Mark Dantonio and Michigan coach Brady Hoke took part in a Michigan High School Football Coaches Association event today. Dantonio said Andrew Maxwell remains the Spartans' starting quarterback. Maxwell, who started every game as a junior last season, was replaced by redshirt freshman Connor Cook in MSU's bowl game. Hoke said he was pleased with the emergence of quarterback Devin Gardner and the growth of his defensive line this past season.
