NHL players are voting on ratification of the new Collective Bargaining Agreement through tomorrow at 8 a.m. Eastern. If the deal is approved, training camps are expected to begin on Sunday. The Red Wings will open camp at Compuware Sports Arena in Plymouth because Joe Louis Arena is being used for events surrounding the North American International Auto Show. Detroit will open the regular season on Saturday, January 19th at St. Louis. The Red Wings home opener will be Tuesday, January 22nd against the Stars.
The Tigers will raise their 2012 American League championship banner during a pregame ceremony before their home opener on April 5. The banner probably will fly on the center-field flag pole, and remain there the entire season. Detroit wil host the New York Yankees, the team swept by the Tigers during last year's AL championship series. Detroit opens the season on the road, at Minnesota on April 1.
The chance to see the Tigers take their cuts during batting practice before spring training games will cost $5. A spokeswoman in the team's Lakeland, Florida office confirmed fans will be allowed to view BP sessions from the left field berm at Joker Marchant Stadium. Those who have game tickets but not a batting practice pass will be allowed inside the stadium when gates normally open.
Boxing great Thomas Hearns will be awarded a Brown Bomber Jacket during an annual ceremony on June 22 at the Doubletree Hotel in Detroit. Brown Bomber Jackets are awarded in the memory of Detroit legend Joe Louis, who defeated Max Schmelling on June 22, 1938, for the heavyweight title. Louis is memorialized at the Joe Louis Video Memorial Room located in Cobo Convention Center and will be open for the auto show.
