Mystery Donor To NLA Revealed - Fundraiser Scheduled Wed, 03 Oct 2012 01:50:11 EDT
It has been a close kept secret over 10 years, but the mystery donor who funded construction of the second sheet of ice at Northern Lights Arena has stepped forward.
The mystery donor was Mike Kendziorski, former owner of Perches I.G.A. who says back then, his whole family was in on the decision and supported his plan. In what he described as a "substantial amount", he indicated he even put his store on the line as collateral and the 10 year loan has now been paid off. The money paid for the building debt and freed up cash for skating instruction programs.
"It was all for the kids and many people have to realize the true gem we have in the community," he said.
So why even bother to expose the mystery 10 years later ?
With all the bad feelings and controversy surrounding the arena, Kendziorski felt he did not want any recognition, but it was time to heal all wounds. He worked to help mend fences and agreed to reveal his contribution and future assistance on the condition that all sides should start working together.
"Where we grow from here ? Time will tell you know what I mean, it's just.... we're just starting and I have good feelings, I have good vibes, I really do," Kendziorski said.
What has resulted is all parties working on a huge fundraiser to be held November 3rd that Kendziorski hopes will result in funding skating programs for the next few years, with no money going towards arena operations. Part of the deal was that the event had to be held at the Aplex. As well, each rink will have proper names that will be formally announced at the fundraiser.
Mentioning many of the individuals from the various organizations by name, Kendziorski observed it has been a domino effect of collaboration after talks started about a month or 2 ago.
"They're really not bad people," he said.
