July 16-18 Memorial Tournament Results - NLA Wed, 21 Jul 2010 14:38:30 EDT
Northern Lights Arena in Alpena Michigan played host to the annual “Memorial Tournament” the weekend of July 16th-18th 2010. The tournament is played to honor the memory of four young hockey players who lost their lives in tragic accidents. Parent of the young players, dropped the opening ceremonial pucks and awarded the medals at the conclusion of the tournament.
Nine teams from throughout Michigan competed for this mid-summer title providing Alpena fans with some excellent hockey as well as an opportunity for teams to identify strengths and weaknesses they will be faced with in the coming season.
The semi-final saw Eisenhower defeat Lowell-Caledonia in a great match up. This game was lead by excellent goal tending and hard aggressive hitting.
Close checking and fast action dominated the Championship game, which pitted Eisenhower against the undefeated team from Lincoln-Milan! The game was hard fought and both team displayed excellent individual talent as well as good team play. Number 9 Bobby Gasser with 2 goals and an assist led Lincoln-Milan to a 5-2 victory. Lincoln’s number 8 Josh Cassell added a goal and 2 assists. For Eisenhower Mike Casali and Marc Havrilla each posted a goal and an assist with Jacob VanSlembrouck chipping in two assists in a valiant effort. Final standings were:

2 - Eisenhower
3 - Lowell-Caledonia
4 - Alpena Flyers
5 - Macomb-Dakota
6 - L’anse Creuse North
7 - Walled Lake (White)
8 - Walled Lake (Red)
9 - Cheboygan
Nineteen games were played over the three day tournament with twenty-one more to follow July 23rd-25th, as Northern Lights Arena plays host to their second in as many weeks, high school age tournament. Next weekends event is the Bill Gohlke Memorial.
