Alpena Thunder Junior Hockey Team and NJHL Announces National Sanctioning Wed, 21 Jul 2010 3:30:35 EDT
The Alpena Thunder Junior Hockey Team is pleased to announce that the NJHL and Alpena Thunder team have reached an agreement with the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) that provides the NJHL and its member teams national sanctioning by an internationally recognized body. “The AAU is one of the largest, strongest and most respected governing bodies in all of amateur sports.” Said Thunder GM Joseph Kolodziej. “As a team we really wanted this sanctioning for our players. It provides an insurance coverage, a governing body that establishes standards, and upon other leagues joining will eventually provide the opportunity for our players to compete for a national championship. The AAU is going to play a large part in the future of junior hockey, and we are glad we can be a part of the first group to get involved.” The AAU was founded in 1888 to establish standards and uniformity in amateur sport. During its early years the AAU served as a leader in international sport representing the U.S. in the international sports federations. The AAU worked closely with the Olympic movement to prepare athletes for the Olympic Games. After the Amateur Sports Act of 1978, the AAU has focused its efforts into providing sports programs for all participants of all ages beginning at the grass roots level. The philosophy of "Sports for All, Forever," is shared by over 500,000 participants and over 50,000 volunteers “When looking at the landscape of junior hockey, its always changing. Teams change, leagues change, standards and expectations from players change every year. This sanctioning allows our team to provide what most parents are looking for; insurance, legitimacy, standards, and an opportunity to play under the umbrella of a highly regarded governing body. This will allow us to recruit better, provide more to players, and in turn provide more to our fans and the community, it’s a win for everyone.” Said Kolodziej. The Alpena Thunder Hockey Club will play all of its home games in the beautiful Northern Lights Arena.
