A former Alpena athlete is trying out for the summer Olympics.... scheduled for August 2008 in Beijing, China.

Michelle Suszek, a 2000 graduate from Alpena High School, plans to compete in the Olympic trials in Boston for marathon running on April 20th... a day before the Boston marathon. She'd be up against 120 women for one of three spots.

Michelle's mother Carol says, "She's got her work cut out for her." But says it's been a dream of Michelle's since she was little. She described her daughter as being very athletic, a hard worker, and a person that gives it her all.

Michelle, now a personal trainer in Colorado, has participated in a number of sports including wrestling, track, cross country, and soccer.

To help with expenses associated with the Olympic trials, a couple of fundraising events are taking place this weekend in Alpena. A hot dog fundraiser is on Saturday from 10 am to 4 pm at Neiman's Family Market. And on Sunday is a dork brothers run / walk. Registration is from 1 pm until the 2 pm race. Entry fee is $10.00.
