In front of an announced crowd of 678 fans it was the Jimmy McCusker show, the IceDigger captain scored three straight goals for the visitors to help send the game to over time against the first place St. Louis Bandits (36-8-2 74 pts.) before IceDiggers leading scorer Erik Peterson netted the game winner on the power play for a 4-3 win.
McCusker scored two extra attacker goals with under 45 seconds remaining in the third period. The Novi MI native scored all three goals for Alpena in regulation. It was McCusker's first Jr. "A" hat trick.
"We did a good job of finding a way to come back and tie the game and we took advantage of an opportunity in over time to get the win." said head coach Kenny Miller "Jimmy did a good job tonight leading our team by example, he was definitely a difference maker tonight."
Nick Graves made 37 stops tonight to earn the win in net for Alpena. Graves record improved to 12-1-2 with Alpena.
The IceDiggers were 2 for 6 on the power play.
With the win the IceDiggers (26-15-3 55 pts.) stay three points behind second place Mahoning Valley (27-13-4 58 pts.) who won tonight 5-4 in a shootout over Traverse City in Boardman OH.
"We know that if we do not play well tomorrow (Saturday) then tonight's game doesn't mean much." added Miller
