Efforts Continue to Secure Bridge Funding

Alpena County Road Commission members decided to allow staff to file grant applications to fund repairs for the Bagley Street Bridge.

Tuesday (06), the Road Commission Board approved of a resolution, in what commission Manager Larry Orcutt called "A continuing process". Requests have been repeatedly denied for the past 10 years, as competition for dollars is very high and limited as only 4 or 5 projects in Northern Michigan get approved each year.

The resolution pledges the Road Commission will fund matching dollars along with design and engineering costs. Orcutt noted that other municipalities in the county will also be asked to submit similar resolutions of support.

Persistence pays as funding to replace a bridge in 2020 over the Devils River on Ossineke Road and another on Werth Road in 2019 spanning Mud Creek have been funded for nearly a million dollars each. But renovations of the Bagley Street Bridge will cost in the 6-point 3 million dollar range, and officials have tried to couple several grants together to fund the project that calls for widening and pedestrian walkways.

Local bridge funds, transportation alternative funding to enhance non motorized access, and economic development grants are all possible funding sources.
