A suspected drug lab operation in a Gaylord apartment resulted in an explosion Saturday morning (March 3rd).
Straits Area Narcotics Enforcement (SANE) officials say the subjects living in the apartment were not present when they arrived. The force of the explosion pushed adjoining walls into the neighboring apartments, causing excessive damage to the structure
Emergency personnel noticed a strong chemical smell, and the Michigan State Police Seventh District Clandestine Lab Response team, along with the Seventh District’s Fire Marshal detective, responded to the scene. A search warrant for the apartment and a suspect vehicle were obtained. Detectives found empty cans of butane, marijuana, marijuana wax and other evidence related to a Butane Hash Oil (BHO) lab in the apartment. Detectives also seized syringes, digital scales and evidence of the abuse of other drugs.
The suspects had driven themselves to Otsego Memorial Hospital, and due to the extent of their physical injuries, they were airlifted to a burn unit for further treatment. Tenants of the adjoining apartment were not injured.
SANE was assisted by the Otsego County Fire Department, Gaylord City Police, MSP Gaylord Post, Seventh District Fire Marshal, Petoskey Department of Public Safety, and Otsego County Animal Control
