Six teens have been selected to participate in the first round of the cadet program to be hosted by the Alpena Township Fire Department.
Students from the age of 15 to 18 were invited to apply. To be considered for the program they were required to maintain at least a C plus grade average in high school, attend at least 70 percent of all regularly scheduled fire department meetings, and must be in good physical condition.
The three girls chosen for the program include Justice Carter, Hunter Lindquist and Ursala Duncan. The three boys are Matthew Benedict, Blake Scott and Austin McLaren.
Captain Tom Tolin said this is a great opportunity for those who have an interest in fire fighting and responding to medical calls. He also said it is chance for those students to move forward in a positive direction, as being a cadet can be used as a stepping stone for further opportunities such as advancing in the medical field.
The cadets will have their first meeting mid December where in addition to learning more about their new roles, they will also discuss fundraising ideas to help finance their new adventure.
