Wednesday night's (11-29) Shop with a Hero event put smiles on a lot of young faces

About 30 kids, from Montmorency and Alpena counties who were referred to the program by the Department of Humans Services went Christmas shopping with local heroes at the Alpena Meijer store.

Those heroes included personnel from the Michigan State Police Post in Alpena, the Alpena Combat Readiness Training Center, Alpena Sheriff's Office, Alpena City Police and Fire departments, and firefighters from the Alpena Township Fire Department.

Each child was paired with hero and given a $100.00 gift card donated by Meijer to buy Christmas gifts for family members, or for themselves. They shopped throughout the store for toys, clothing, jewelry and food items.

Kids and their families also enjoyed pizza from Mancino's along with pop, water, chips and candy. They also had a visit, and their picture taken with Santa.

Each child also took home gifts from Pepsi, Alpena Rotary Club, WATZ and Dr. James Wolf.

Volunteers from the Rotary Club, the Alpena Prosecutor's Office, MSU Exchange, MSP, and WATZ wrapped each child’s gifts.

MSP Community Service Trooper Ashley Simpson who organized the third annual event said, "We do this just to give the kids a good Christmas experience, no matter what the circumstances are in their lives. This is for them."
