Perhaps its colder weather, or just by chance, but the inmate population has been increasing at the Presque Isle County Jail.

Sheriff Bob Paschke recently told commissioners that the inmate count last week was 39. The facility has a capacity of 24 and 29 were being housed in the county. Another 10 inmates were being housed in Montmorency county, and the count for Presque Isle County as a whole is made up of 31 males and eight females. Two were expected to be transferred to prison in Jackson within the week.

"I don't know why, or what the spike is", Paschke said, and noted that Cheboygan and Alpena have been at full counts in recent weeks.

Alpena and Cheboygan normally take overflow from Presque Isle County, but since both were full, that resulted in Montmorency being utilized to house additional prisoners from Presque Isle County.

"They're down, they only have six inmates of their own," Paschke said, but mentioned numbers do fluctuate.
