Alpena Commissioners - One Meeting Per Month for Road Commission
Thu, 30 Nov 2017 06:00:55 EST
Alpena County Commissioners were asked, and approved of the Alpena County Road Commission holding only one meeting a month.
The road board currently meets bi weekly, but with light agendas, meetings are usually done within a half hour or canceled, and members receive 1-hundred 50 dollars ($150.00) per meeting. So the idea was allow one meeting a month, and increase the per-diem stipend to 3-hundred dollars ($300.00).
County Commissioner Ron McDonald opposed the increase, feeling compensation was too high and staff takes care of the bulk of business. He made a motion at Tuesdays meeting to send the issue back to the personnel committee for further study which resulted in a 3 - 3 tie, so it died for a lack of majority.
Personnel Committee Chairman Brad McRoberts observed that other counties pay similar compensation, the workload will basically remain the same, and it will be an incentive to not miss meetings, which was a complaint in the past. A base wage was lowered and each road commissioner will make 7-hundred 50 dollars ($750.00) for each month if they attend the monthly session.
A motion was made to increase the per-diem which passed on a 4-2 vote.
The revised rate schedule goes in effect January 1st, and meetings have yet to be scheduled by the Road Commission board, which will be at their organizational session in January.
