Alpena County Sheriff Deputy and Animal Control Officer Michelle Reid is pursuing an animal welfare grant.

The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD), Animal Industry Division (AID), offers grants to promote sterilization and adoption of dogs and
cats, or expenses related to their care.

Reid is applying for ten-thousand dollars ($10,000.00) which would not have to be matched by the county.

If awarded, the funding would help cover expenses related to animal cruelty or neglect cases, such as recent case of care of numerous cats from a cat hoarding situation.

Dollars can also be used to educate the public, or for equipment, or training of personnel to enforce state animal anti cruelly laws.

Reid hoped she would find out the status of the application by mid December.
