During their meeting November 20th, Alpena City Council members approved accepting a donation of a 1941 Mack fire engine.
City Fire Chief Bill Forbush said Leonard Zolnierek, a lifelong Alpena resident and businessman passed away in September. His wishes were that the truck be cared for and remain in Alpena. The truck was restored years ago and no repair costs are anticipated in the near future.
Forbush went on to say, "legend has it", that only two Mack fire trucks were produced in 1941 as manufacturing capacity was used for World War II effort and this is one of those trucks.
The fire truck can be stored in the Public Safety storage building and would be brought out for the two annual parades and maybe even some community events.
