New research from the University of Michigan shows childhood spankings can lead to mental health problems later in life.
The study by two U of M associate professors of social work indicates the violence caused by spanking can lead adults to feel depressed, attempt suicide, drink at moderate-to-heavy levels or use illegal drugs.
The study involved 8,300 people ranging in age from 19 to 97 years who completed self reports and underwent routine checkups.
The findings appear in Child Abuse & Neglect.
