Boil Water Notice Lifted

Things are getting back to normal after a boil water notice was issued over the weekend for Alpena City and some Township water customers.

The notice was issued after a major water main break was discovered Friday night (November 17th) near the City of Alpena Water Treatment Plant. Workers were able to route water to customers on other lines and isolate the break to make repairs.

The main break resulted in significant pressure loss to the City of Alpena water system which had the potential to lead to contamination if ground water, surface water, dirt or bacteria entered the system through the broken pipe. As a matter of precaution, water samples were taken and the boil water notice was issued in case of contamination to the closed water system.

Since the city also supplies water to Alpena Township, the notice which was lifted on Sunday morning was also extended to some of those customers as well.
