During last week's meeting (1-27) of the Alpena Township Board of Trustees, Department of Public Works Director Jerry Bleau spoke highly of the cooperation between the City of Alpena and Alpena Township during a recent water emergency.
On Friday, November 17th a major water main break was discovered near the City of Alpena Water Treatment Plant. The main break resulted in significant pressure loss to the City water system which had the potential to lead to contamination. As a matter of precaution, a boil water notice was issued.
That boil water notice was extended to township water customers as well. According to Bleau, both sides worked well together, and had a lot of communication going, nobody got sick and everybody got their water back.
Bleau said, "When it came down to public safety, they were just as concerned as I was."
The boil water notice was lifted the following Sunday, November 19th.
The city and township have been at odds over the past several years as they work to resolve differences concerning water, sewer rates.
