Presentation on Newly Discovered Shipwrecks
Tue, 05 Dec 2017 06:01:00 EST

Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary's Research Coordinator, John Bright, will be giving a presentation on recent shipwreck discoveries in the marine sanctuary.

In May of this year, researchers from the sanctuary and the University of Delaware, located two new shipwreck sites in 300 feet of water off the coast of Presque Isle. One was the steel bulk carrier Choctaw and the second vessel was wooden bulk carrier Ohio.

Throughout the summer, the sanctuary investigated and documented both sites with an array of underwater survey tools, including ROVs and autonomous vehicles. Referencing data they collected with historical records, both vessels were identified.

The presentation will be at the Great Lakes Maritime Heritage Center Theater, Thursday (December 7th) at 6 p.m.

The event is free and open to all ages.
