PI County Land Donation Near 40 Mile Park On Hold

Presque Isle County Commissioners tabled a decision on accepting a property donation for a park pending further legal review and who would actually own the property.

Commissioner Lee Gapczynski presented the proposal, that a 16 acre parcel from the Gapczynski family adjacent to the 40 Mile Lighthouse Park be donated to the county or Lighthouse Preservation Society group.

The society is willing to do that, and maintain it, ensuring that they conform to restrictions such as no motorized vehicles, and only walking trails or similar low impact activity.

The problem is, its felt the county has enough buildings and parks to maintain and another might be a burden on the budget. But acceptance is possible if the society agrees to maintain the property. The question is if the society took ownership, would they be restricted and blocked from future sale to a private individual.

That would be an issue for the family to decide and language would have to be put into a deed, so the issue was tabled pending further legal review and discussion on terms.
