The Great Lakes Lore Maritime Museum in Rogers City will honor victims of the Cedarville disaster Saturday with a free bell ringing ceremony at 2 p.m.

Museum President and Director David Erickson, himself a Cedarville survivor, said ten men died when the ship sank in the Straits of Mackinaw on May 7, 1965.

"That morning the water temperature was 36 degrees, the air temperature was 41 degrees. Your life expectancy in that water was less than an hour and every member on the Cedarville except one took a swim that morning."

Sixteen of the wreck's survivors have died since. Erickson said the Maritime Museum, which is located in downtown Rogers City, is the only one on the Great Lakes that honors the men and women who sailed the Great Lakes. After the ceremony Saturday people will be allowed to tour the museum for free.
