New Hanger In Oscoda To Be Unveiled Thu, 08 May 2008 15:36:22
Northern Michigan recently got an economic boost. A year long project to construct a 747-800 hanger at the former Wurtsmith Air Force base in Oscoda is now complete. The 8.7-million dollar project is result of a collaboration at the Local, State, and Federal levels, and is welcoming 150 to 200 additional aircraft mechanics and support jobs. The heavy aircraft maintenance facility is 260-foot wide by 305-foot long, or just under two acres under a single clear span roof. Officials say the "high door is large enough to house any aircraft in the world, except the airbus A380." In celebration of its creation, the Airport Authority is hosting a grand opening event on May 9th at 2:30 p.m. at the site. The public is welcome. Invitations have been sent out to various Politicians that service the area, as well as representative of the Governor. The day will involve speakers, presentations, and of course a view of the new hanger. PHOTO CREDIT:John Barsalou - Workers near completion of the hanger roof.
