Levin Continues To Support Expansion Of Thunder Bay Sanctuary

Michigan's U.S. Senator Carl Levin recently testified to a subcommittee of the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Technology on the need for legislation to expand the Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary.

Levin says, “Thunder Bay is an underwater museum of maritime history.... It is one of the few places where researchers and divers can go to explore well preserved shipwrecks and witness this history first-hand. We need to do everything we can to preserve the rich past of the Great Lakes."

Levin introduced legislation in 2007 that would extend the Sanctuary’s boundaries to include the waters off of Alcona, Alpena and Presque Isle Counties and would extend the sanctuary east to the International Boundary.

The bill calls for making the sanctuary more than eight times its current size... and to help to preserve an estimated 178 additional shipwrecks.
