Water Main to be Replaced on US-23 Wed, 07 May 2008 5:53:37 The month of May just got a little busier for the crews working on the Chisholm Street resurfacing project. Workers will now be replacing about 1900 feet of water main from the intersection of Chisholm and Johnson Streets to the George Washington Bridge after it was approved during Monday night's Alpena City Council meeting. City Engineer Rich Sullenger told the council that on April 24 officials discovered a 710-foot section of the main between the intersection and Alpena Regional Medical Center was leaking. After discussions among the city, EarthTec and the Michigan Department of Transportation, it was recommended that the main be replaced all the way to the bridge. That would include an additional 1,200-feet currently exposed due to the construction on Chisholm. Sullenger said that although replacing the entire section is not a necessity right now it will save the city from spending extra money to replace it in the future. The total cost will be about $130,000, which will come out of the city's water fund balance. The city's contractor has said the extra work should not affect the project's scheduled completion date of May 23. |
