Alcona County To Work On Quilt Trail
Tue, 06 May 2008 10:05:53

Alcona County is celebrating 140 years next year. So, to highlight their history and encourage visitors, Residents in Alcona County are preparing a quilt trail.

Project President Cindi VanHurk says, "Other States have done it, but no County in Michigan has done it."

Large plywood squares, ranging from 2-foot square to 8-foot, will be painted to look like quilts and placed on various buildings to reflect historical significance. A driving trail to each site and a brochure would be created. A CD telling stories of each site is also possible in the future.

About 8 blocks passing through five townships will be installed this summer, with more planned in the coming years. VanHurk says, "We hope to have one in every township," which for Alcona is eleven.

The permanent project is being paid for through donations and grants. Organizers have also applied for 6-thousand dollars through Hamburger Helper's My Hometown Helper program. Residents are encouraged to comment on the project on the company's website (www.myhometownhelper.com). Or, if you'd like to donate, call Hollyhock Quilt shoppe in Harrisville at (989) 724-7788.
