Alpena Township Considers Joining Other Communities To Improve DNR Trail Tue, 06 May 2008 3:51:33 There's possibility for improvement of a 70-mile Michigan Department of Natural Resources non-motorized trail that travels through Alpena, Presque Isle, and Cheboygan counties. Emily Meyerson, a Northern Lower Michigan Trailways Coordinator that's working with the DNR, has been contacting affected governmental entities about contributing grant match dollars for a potential project to create a crushed limestone to benefit snowmobiles, bicycles, and pedestrians. The trail is currently deteriorating in areas. If parties agree, efforts to secure 3.1-million in grant funds through the DNR would move forward... the project possibly beginning in 5-years. On Monday, the Alpena Township Board discussed their potential share of 20-thousand... and is waiting to hear a presentation from Meyerson before supporting the project, or committing funds. Alpena Township Supervisor Marie Twite indicated the project is intended to promote tourism and economic development. She says, "People want walking trails and we can't afford to do a trail on our own," but She noted it's possible if entities work together. |
