Research Efforts Continue In Bovine TB

The ongoing effort to eradicate Bovine T.B. in deer and cattle continues, and while it's felt progress is being made, state officials and researchers are not letting up.

Prevalence rates in special Deer Management Unit 452 has dropped to 1 point 4 percent in 2007 and studying data going back 12 years, that figure indicates a statistical significant decreasing trend from a 4 point 9 rate in 1995.

State Department Of Natural Resources Director Rebecca Humphries observed that while progress is being made, efforts will continue on research...

"We think a vaccination for wildlife could be possible and very helpful in these situations. When you get prevalence rates down in the 1 point 4 percent rate, you're at a very low level. We do believe we can drive it to a very critical threshold where it cannot survive in that population."

Humphries explained a catch and release strategy could be possible if a vaccine were developed.

The advantage to such a strategy she said is "You could enjoy hunting, but you wouldn't have to drive your deer populations so low."
