Rogers City Tries Walking School Bus Concept Mon, 05 May 2008 4:20:46 There's an alternative to riding a school bus in Rogers City, at least for a trial run. It's called the walking school bus, and is an idea from the federal Safe Routes To School program administered through the Michigan Department of Transportation. Basically, an adult guides a group of students on a walk to School, with stops along the way. City, School, and Police Officials recently tried the concept. The turn-out wasn't huge, but City Manager Mark Slown mentioned it's organized and safe, encourages healthy activity, and saves on gasoline costs. Whether the walking school bus will be a permanent option is unknown. Slown notes routes may need to change, as He noticed that in some instances students didn't want to wait around during stops.
