Elk And Bear Licenses Now Available

The number of elk licenses available for Michigan Hunters is double compared to last year.

The Natural Resources Commission have set 2008 elk season dates and quotas. With an estimated 12-hundred animals, and a management goal of 800 to 900 elk.... 330 elk licenses will be available this year.

Early hunts are set for August 26 to 29, September 12 to 16, December 9 to 16, and if necessary, in mid-January.

To apply for an elk license, go online the DNR website, visit an authorized license agent or the DNR Operations Service Center now (May 1st ) through June 1. Bear licenses will also be available during this time. A nonrefundable four-dollar fee must be paid when applying. Only Michigan residents are eligible.

Drawing results for elk will be posted on the DNR Web site on Monday, June 23rd... and on June 30th for bear licenses.

Bear hunts are scheduled for September 10th through October 26th in all Upper Peninsula units, except Drummond Island... September 10th through October 21st on Drummond Island, and September 19 through 25th in Baldwin, Gladwin, and Red Oak bear management units. Successful applicants for the Baldwin Unit can hunt in the Northern four counties from September 12 through 25. As well, an additional hunt period for bow and arrow will held in the Red Oak Unit October 3 through 9.

As for 2008 bear licenses, the quota for the Western Upper Peninsula is over 58-hundred (26% greater than last year). The license quota for the Eastern UP is around 49-hundred (7% less than last year). Drummond Island has a quota of eight licenses, a decrease from 25 icenses in 2007. In the Northern Lower Peninsula, the proposed 2008 license quota is over 22-hundred over last year's almost two-thousand.
