Students Win Essay Contest As Alpena Celebrates Law Day

Three Alpena High School students were honored recently, as part of law day.... celebrated nationwide during the month of May.

The 26th Judicial Circuit Bar Association of Alpena County conducted an essay contest.... this year's theme being "The rule of Law: Foundation for Communities of Opportunity and Equity." Around a dozen students wrote 700 to 1200 word essays based on one of four related questions.

At a special Ceremony on May 1st at Circuit Court, Senior Jeremy Ross was honored as a first place recipient, receiving a 300-dollar cash prize. 10th Grader Hilary Burg took 2nd place and 200-dollars, and Senior Tiffany Bates took 3rd place and 100-dollars.

Also as part of law day, Area Attorneys visited various schools to discuss law and answer questions... Thunder Bay Junior High School even participating in a mock trial.

Law day was first proclaimed in 1958 by President Dwight D Eishenhower as a "day of National dedication to the principle of government under law."
