Bomb Threat Disrupts Alpena School Day Fri, 02 May 2008 3:15:43
For the second time in a year, Alpena Schools Superintendent Brent Holcomb is "disappointed" about a bomb threat discovered Thursday at Alpena High School. He says, "We lost a lot of time" and adds "I hate to say it, but if we identify the students that are involved in doing these threats, we're gonna take some pretty heavy action against them, and I'm not gonna have a whole lot of sympathy for 'em, because I don't think they fully realize how serious this is." The written threat was found on a bathroom wall at the High School, indicating a specific time of 1:55 pm. At about 1:30 pm, High School Principal Matt Poli reported the discovery to police and students were evacuated, with the majority being sent to the Junior High School building. Holcomb says "We reacted to it and really just looked at it as a safety concern." And, He thought students did a great job, given the situation. Holcomb adds, "In past experience I would say that these typically are just students that want to create a reaction and disrupt the school day." He adds, "The sad fact is.... most kids are caught and eventually they have to deal with the consequences," which He notes could include legal fees, and being expelled from school. All three Alpena Police agencies responded to the incident, and State Police sent for a K-9 dog from Gaylord to do a sweep of the building Thursday. So far, No suspects have been identified, and Alpena Police Department Evidence Technicians were processing the scene. Security camera images will also be reviewed in the process. All afternoon athletic events and activities were canceled yesterday, but classes will resume as normal for today. |
