Rogers City Parents Confirm Safety Concerns With Route To School Thu, 01 May 2008 12:26:52 A recent survey indicates that parents in Rogers City are concerned about their children's route to school. The problem is travel conditions for walkers on Huron and Erie streets... as the sidewalks end, and students have to walk on the streets during heavy traffic. As well, there are hindrances students have with non shoveled sidewalks in the winter. The City and School District have been working together to secure grant money through the Michigan Department of Transportation for the federally funded Safe Routes to Schools program. That could lead to sidewalk installation, signage, and road markers. "So we're on track of where our focus is," said Rogers City Schools Superintendent Dan Byrne, who wasn't surprised by data results. The next step in the process is to hold meetings with stakeholders and parents to share data results and gather input. No meeting dates have been set at this time. "It's progressing," Byrne said, "but slower than I'd hoped." |
