Hospital - Nurse Contract Talks On Hold

Negotiations between the Michigan Nurses Association and Alpena Regional Medical Center are on hold for further research.

The Michigan Nurses Association has asked that the State initiate a fact finding process, as it relates to collective bargaining. As explained by Hospital Chief Executive Officer Karmon BJella... a third party State employee will review ARMC's market and see what pressures there are for salary, benefits, and the like. Negotiations between the two groups are expected to follow the study.

ARMC Board of Trustees touched on the topic during a personnel report Tuesday, with several nurses in attendance. Trustees later went into closed session to discuss the collective bargaining process, and medical staff pay review issues. No action resulted.

Currently, over 200 nurses are working without a contract... the three year agreement expiring this past February.

Local MNA Union Registered Nurses rejected the Hospital's final contract offer earlier this month (April). They cited concerns with a request to take concessions in retirement, longevity and insurance costs compared to other union groups, language associated with health and safety and OSHA standards against violence, and input regarding nurse to patient staffing levels.
